IP cameras have become a fundamental part of modern video surveillance systems. They are used almost everywhere: construction sites, factories, warehouses, retail stores, campuses, transportation systems, smart cities, and traditional security installations.

Deploying cameras, however, is no longer the hardest part.

A modern surveillance system may have tens, hundreds, or even thousands of cameras continuously producing video. The real challenge is turning all that video into useful information. A camera can capture an event. But who is going to notice it?

Traditional video surveillance systems are designed primarily to capture, display, and record video. While these capabilities remain essential, they are no longer sufficient for environments that require proactive monitoring, rapid incident detection, and intelligent analysis.

AI video surveillance is used across many industries, including construction, manufacturing, warehouses, retail, and security. It helps organizations detect safety risks, monitor equipment, identify unusual activities, and improve operational efficiency through intelligent video analysis.

Let’s explore six major problems with traditional video surveillance and how Ant Media Server and AIVision can help solve them.

Traditional surveillance systems generally follow a simple model:

Camera → Video Management System → Monitor / Recording → Human Operator Enter fullscreen mode Exit fullscreen mode This works well for viewing and recording video, but it creates several problems as the number of cameras grows.

Imagine a construction site with 50 cameras.

An operator may need to detect something that happens for only a few seconds:

Even if every camera is working perfectly, expecting someone to continuously monitor dozens of video feeds and notice every important event is unrealistic.

The problem becomes even larger when hundreds or thousands of cameras are involved.

Instead of relying entirely on human attention, AI can analyze camera feeds and identify potentially important situations.

Ant Media Server manages incoming IP camera streams, while AIVision connects those streams to Vision Language Models (VLMs) capable of understanding visual content.

For example, AIVision can periodically analyze camera frames using questions such as:

When a potential problem is identified, the system can generate an event or alert for further action.

Surveillance cameras generate enormous amounts of video. But most of that video does not require anyone’s attention.

A camera monitoring a warehouse entrance, for example, may record for 24 hours while only a handful of events actually matter.

Traditional surveillance systems often require operators to:

The challenge is not capturing video. It is finding the few important moments hidden inside thousands of hours of recordings.

AIVision changes the workflow from passively recording everything to actively identifying relevant events.

Live Stream → Sample Frame → Vision Model → Analysis → Result Enter fullscreen mode Exit fullscreen mode AIVision can periodically extract frames from live streams and submit them to a vision model for analysis.

The resulting information can be associated with the stream and timestamp, stored, and retrieved through APIs.

For example, rather than searching through hours of construction-site recordings, an application can use AI-generated results to identify when a potential safety violation occurred.

The result is a shift from passive video recording toward actionable video intelligence.

Traditional computer vision systems are often built around specialized models designed for specific detection tasks.

Each new requirement can introduce additional model development, integration, deployment, and maintenance work.

This becomes particularly challenging when surveillance requirements change frequently or when different industries need different types of analysis.

Vision Language Models introduce a more flexible approach. Instead of building a separate detection pipeline for every question, applications can describe what they want to know about an image using natural language.

For example, the same camera stream could be analyzed using different prompts:

AIVision provides the integration layer between live video streams and these vision models.

In suitable use cases, introducing a new surveillance rule may become a matter of defining a new prompt rather than developing an entirely new computer vision pipeline.

This approach also enables capabilities beyond traditional object detection, including:

Specialized models may still be preferable for tasks requiring high accuracy, precise localization, or continuous motion analysis. However, VLMs offer a flexible alternative for many visual monitoring scenarios.

One approach to AI video analytics is continuously sending video or extracted images to external cloud services.

However, this may not be acceptable for every organization.

Factories, construction sites, corporate campuses, critical infrastructure, and other private environments may contain sensitive visual information.

Cloud-based processing can introduce several concerns:

For many organizations, keeping video recordings on-premise is not enough. AI inference and analysis results may also need to remain within their own infrastructure.

AIVision provides the flexibility to use both cloud-based and locally hosted AI models, allowing organizations to choose the deployment approach that best fits their requirements.

With Ant Media Server and AIVision, organizations can build AI-powered video surveillance solutions without being locked into a single AI provider or deployment environment.

For the use cases which requires data privacy, it offers such an architecture.

IP Cameras → Local Ant Media Server → AIVision → Local Vision Model Enter fullscreen mode Exit fullscreen mode In this architecture:

Organizations can therefore introduce AI capabilities without necessarily transferring their surveillance data to external services.

Analyzing every frame from every surveillance camera can require significant computing resources.

Consider a surveillance system with 100 cameras operating at 30 frames per second.

100 cameras × 30 FPS = 3,000 frames per second Enter fullscreen mode Exit fullscreen mode Running AI inference on every frame may require substantial GPU capacity.

However, not every surveillance application needs frame-by-frame analysis.

Processing every frame can therefore be unnecessary for certain use cases.

AIVision can periodically extract frames from live streams instead of continuously sending every frame to an AI model.

The sampling interval can be configured according to the application’s requirements.

This approach reduces the number of AI inference operations and can significantly lower the computing resources required. It also allows organizations to allocate processing capacity according to the importance of each monitoring task.

For fast-moving events, however, longer sampling intervals can miss short incidents. Sampling frequency should therefore match the detection requirements of each application.

Building an AI-powered surveillance system from scratch often requires integrating several independent components.

Managing these components separately increases development complexity and maintenance effort.

Organizations may already have a working surveillance infrastructure but lack a straightforward way to add AI analysis to their existing video streams.

Ant Media Server provides the video infrastructure required to ingest, manage, process, record, and deliver live streams.

IP cameras and other video sources can be connected to Ant Media Server, which supports streaming technologies including WebRTC, HLS, and LL-HLS for video delivery. AIVision Plugin extends this infrastructure by connecting live video streams to AI vision models.

IP Camera → Ant Media Server → AIVision → Vision Model → Analysis Result Enter fullscreen mode Exit fullscreen mode Rather than developing an entirely separate AI video processing infrastructure, developers can build on the existing Ant Media Server ecosystem.

This makes it easier to add AI-powered video intelligence to existing streaming workflows.

Consider a construction site with 20 IP cameras monitoring different working areas.

Traditionally, someone would need to monitor those cameras continuously or review recordings after an incident.

With Ant Media Server and AIVision, the workflow changes:

Camera → AMS → AIVision → VLM → Safety Violation → Event / Alert Enter fullscreen mode Exit fullscreen mode Instead of requiring someone to continuously watch all 20 cameras, the system helps direct human attention toward situations that may require action.

We will present how AIVision works in the next blogpost for this example. The screenshot above is just a teaser.

Traditional video surveillance systems are effective at recording and monitoring environments, but they still rely heavily on human attention and manual processes. AI-powered surveillance goes a step further by automatically analyzing video streams, detecting potential risks, and providing actionable insights in real time.

By combining Ant Media Server’s video streaming capabilities with AIVision’s AI-powered analysis, organizations can build smarter surveillance solutions without replacing their existing camera infrastructure. This makes it easier to improve safety, reduce manual monitoring, and scale surveillance operations across different environments.
