GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) is the practice of making your content easy for AI tools, such as chatbots and AI search summaries, to understand, trust and cite. Both build on traditional SEO.

AEO means writing and structuring content so it can be used as the direct answer to a question. That includes featured snippets, "People also ask" boxes, voice assistant replies and AI answer boxes.

An answer engine looks for a clear question, a short and accurate answer, and signals that the source can be trusted.

GEO means making your content easy for generative AI systems to retrieve, summarize and cite. These systems pull from many sources and combine them into one response. Your goal is to be one of the sources they choose and name.

GEO rewards content that is specific, original, well-structured and clearly attributed to a real author or organization.

All three rely on the same base: a fast, crawlable site with genuinely useful content.

1. Answer the question first. Put a 40 to 60 word direct answer right under each question heading, then expand below it. This is the single most useful AEO habit.

2. Use question-style headings. Write headings the way people ask: "How do I add schema markup?" rather than "Schema Markup Overview". Use one H1 and logical H2s and H3s.

3. Keep paragraphs short and self-contained. AI systems often lift a single passage. Make each section understandable on its own, without relying on "as mentioned above".

4. Add an FAQ section. Include 4 to 6 real questions at the end of key pages, with concise answers.

5. Add structured data. Schema helps machines identify what your page is. Google restricts FAQ rich results to a small set of sites, so don't expect a visual boost, but valid markup still helps systems parse your content. Validate it with Google's Rich Results Test.

Show real expertise. Add an author name, a short bio, your organization details and dates. Cite credible sources and link to them. Trust signals matter for both ranking and citation.

7. Publish something original. Original data, examples, screenshots, mini case studies and clear opinions give AI tools a reason to cite you instead of the thousand pages that say the same thing.

8. Build your brand presence beyond your site. Systems learn what your brand is from many places. Keep your name, description and links consistent across your website, LinkedIn, directories and communities like DEV. If you want help connecting visibility, content and brand, a full-service brand growth partner can take on the strategy side.

9. Keep the technical basics healthy. Don't block crawlers by accident in robots.txt, keep pages fast and mobile-friendly, use clean HTML, and refresh important content regularly with real updates.

Is AEO replacing SEO? No. AEO and GEO sit on top of SEO. If your pages can't be crawled, indexed or trusted, they're unlikely to be used as answers.

Can I guarantee my content will appear in AI answers? No. No one controls what AI systems cite. You can improve your chances with clear structure, accurate information and strong trust signals.

What's the easiest first step? Pick your 5 most important pages. Add a direct answer at the top of each section and an FAQ at the bottom.

How long does it take to see results? Expect weeks to months. Track impressions, featured snippets and branded searches in Google Search Console, and test your own questions in AI tools to see whether you're mentioned.

AEO and GEO are not tricks. They come down to being clear, being accurate and being easy to quote. Start with your highest-value pages, make the answers obvious, and build from there.
