This is a submission for the Hacktoberfest Open-Source AI Challenge Week 4: Ghost in the Machine.
AFTERLIGHT is a cinematic, interactive storytelling website inspired by forgotten memories, mysterious signals, ghost stories, and the stories we carry with us.
The idea behind AFTERLIGHT is simple: some stories deserve to live on, even when the world moves forward.
Users can enter a mysterious memory, a forgotten place, or a strange little detail, then generate a story by choosing from four atmospheres:
The website also includes short and longer story modes, a copy-story feature, archive-style numbering, atmospheric animations, and a responsive dark interface.
I interpreted Ghost in the Machine as a meeting point between technology, memory, and the unknown—a place where forgotten stories can find a new voice.

The project is organized into separate files:
My focus was on creating an immersive experience rather than just another basic text generator. The dark interface, subtle glowing accents, typography, animated signal indicators, and archive-inspired layout help establish the mysterious atmosphere.
Important: This version is a prototype and does not yet connect to an actual open-weight AI model or an open-source AI framework. Connecting a locally running model is a planned next step toward making AFTERLIGHT a fully AI-powered project.
I believe stories, memories, and creative tools should not be locked inside a single platform.
Open innovation makes it possible to build software that people can inspect, adapt, and improve. For a project like AFTERLIGHT, an open-weight model running locally could offer several important advantages:
These are the goals for AFTERLIGHT's future AI integration, rather than capabilities already enabled in the current demo.
For me, open innovation means having the freedom to understand the technology, change it, and keep building on it.
It has been silent for years. Dust covers its surface, the room is forgotten, and nobody expects it to work again.
Then, one night, a faint signal returns.
Is it a memory? A coincidence? Or a story waiting to be heard?
I wanted to create an experience that feels a little mysterious but also reminds us that the past is not always something we leave behind. Sometimes, it is something we preserve, revisit, and share.
Some stories never leave. They simply wait for someone to listen.
Built with curiosity for the Hacktoberfest Open-Source AI Challenge — Week 4: Ghost in the Machine.
