Hacktoberfest Open-Source AI Challenge: Ghost in the Machine Submission 👻🌼

This is a submission for the Hacktoberfest Open-Source AI Challenge Week 4: Ghost in the Machine

I built AFTERLIGHT – The Offline Ghost Archive, a local AI-powered horror story generator inspired by Halloween and the mysterious feeling of the unknown.

The idea behind AFTERLIGHT is simple: what if you could summon a ghost story whenever you wanted, without depending on an online AI service?

The project brings the spirit of Halloween into an interactive AI experience.

The project is built using three separate files:

The project is designed to be simple, lightweight, and easy to run locally.

Instead of sending prompts to a closed AI API, AFTERLIGHT communicates with a locally running Ollama model.

Users can download the model once and generate stories locally.

This makes the project independent of cloud-based AI services for story generation after the initial setup.

For AFTERLIGHT, open innovation is important because AI storytelling should not always depend on expensive cloud services.

Using Ollama and Llama 3.2 makes several things possible:

1. Privacy: Prompts can stay on the user's own machine instead of being sent to an external AI service.

2. Offline capability: Once the model is downloaded, stories can be generated without an internet connection.

3. Freedom to experiment: Developers can change or replace the model and experiment with different storytelling styles.

4. Lower running costs: There is no per-request cloud AI API charge for local inference.

Open-source AI gave me the freedom to experiment, understand how local AI works, and build something without depending on a closed platform.

AFTERLIGHT is more than just a horror story generator.

It explores the idea that stories can make the past feel alive. A simple prompt can turn into a mysterious experience, and imagination can create something that feels almost real.

The name AFTERLIGHT represents what remains after the lights go out — the stories, memories, and mysteries that continue to exist in the darkness.

Sometimes, the scariest thing is not what you see, but what your imagination creates.

Built with curiosity, open-source technology, and a little bit of darkness. 👻
