Students often spend hours organizing their study schedules, managing daily tasks, and preparing notes for examinations. Balancing these responsibilities can be challenging, especially when deadlines are approaching.
To address this problem, I built AI Study Buddy, a simple and user-friendly web application designed to make studying more organized, efficient, and less stressful.
This project was created for the Hacktoberfest 2026 Open-Source AI Challenge — Week 3, themed “Slow and Steady.”
AI Study Buddy is a web-based learning assistant that brings essential study tools together in one place. Its goal is to reduce the effort students spend organizing their work so they can focus more on learning.
AI Notes Summarizer: Uses an open-source, pretrained summarization model to generate shorter versions of study notes.
Daily Task Tracker: Allows students to add tasks and mark completed activities.
Study Planner: Helps students organize their study sessions by subject and time.
Simple User Interface: Provides a clean, responsive layout designed to be easy to use.
Students can enter their notes, request an AI-generated summary, add daily tasks, and schedule study sessions. The summarization feature uses the Transformers.js library with the Xenova/distilbart-cnn-6-6 model to generate summaries directly in the browser.
The first model download may take some time, depending on the internet connection and browser. Once the model is loaded, it can process subsequent requests in the same session.
Open-source AI makes experimentation and learning more accessible to students and developers.
For this project, using a publicly available pretrained model and an open-source inference library provides several advantages:
Accessibility: Developers can experiment with AI without building a model from scratch.
Transparency: The model and library documentation can be examined to understand how the technology works.
Flexibility: Developers can explore alternative compatible models and customize the application.
Learning Opportunities: Students can gain practical experience integrating AI into a real-world application.
Running inference in the browser can also reduce the need to send study notes to a separate application server. However, the model files must be downloaded, and the browser still needs sufficient resources to run the model.
How This Project Supports the “Slow and Steady” Theme
AI Study Buddy focuses on reducing repetitive effort in everyday student life.
Instead of manually shortening notes, remembering every task, and planning each study session separately, students can use a single application to organize these activities.
The idea is simple: save time on routine tasks and spend more energy understanding what you learn.

Building AI Study Buddy helped me understand how frontend technologies can be combined with an open-source AI model to create a practical learning tool.
It also gave me hands-on experience with GitHub, GitHub Codespaces, GitHub Pages, and integrating a pretrained model into a web application.
As a beginner, this project helped me take a step forward in learning how AI can solve small but meaningful everyday problems.
AI Study Buddy is a step toward making study planning simpler and more accessible. By combining productivity features with open-source AI, the project demonstrates how small tools can help students manage their responsibilities more effectively.
I believe open innovation is important because it allows more people to experiment, learn, build, and improve technology together.
Built with curiosity and a commitment to learning during Hacktoberfest 2026.
