Anthropic, the company behind the Claude chatbot, is paying professors, startup founders and senior engineers to spend six weeks to six months testing ways to make AI safer, with some leading to full time jobs.
Anthropic posted the opening on X and detailed the program in a separate post, noting applications for the current round close on Nov. 22. The company builds large language models and markets the Claude family for enterprise and consumer use.
The program targets people who have already led technical work in other fields, not fresh graduates. The company said it wants professors in quantitative disciplines, founders and senior engineers who can frame research agendas and judge which problems matter. That departs from the usual frontier-lab funnel, which recruits heavily from machine learning circles, benchmark leaders and internal referral networks.
The lab is betting that mature researchers from physics, math, neuroscience and software can cross over quickly if given paid time, a mentor and a defined project. Each resident will work on problems set by in-house researchers and matched to the resident's background, with self-study time, talks and one-on-one guidance. The structure suggests the residency aims to convert candidates into full-time lab researchers rather than serve as a prestige fellowship.

The new Residency grows out of the lab's earlier Fellows Program. In Monday's write-up, Anthropic said past fellows produced work on subliminal learning, the Petri auditing tool and persona vectors, evidence the experiment can seed productive internal tools and papers. Shifting the intake toward established technical operators signals that AI safety staffing is a scale problem. The company has also broadened its public hiring and governance footprint recently, it filed for an IPO on Friday, disclosed internal work in security and biology on Sunday, and launched this residency on Monday, adding a labor-market layer to that expansion. The Residency gives both sides a lower-commitment way to test fit, the lab can evaluate whether a physicist or startup founder can work on model evaluations, interpretability or safety cases before offering a full-time role, while the resident can see if frontier lab research suits them without permanently leaving academia or industry. The program raises pressure on competitors such as OpenAI and Google to formalize similar conversion tracks. Frontier AI research faces a narrow labor pool, and the scarcest people are often senior technical leaders who can define problems under uncertainty.
Anthropic did not disclose how many residents it plans to accept this round. With applications closing in 20 days, the company is moving fast enough to make this a live recruiting channel rather than a one-off call for interest.
The Residency turns outside expertise into a paid trial period with a fixed term and a narrow research scope, addressing the simple labor-market problem of recruiting people who can tackle safety questions but sit outside machine learning. The six-week to six-month window gives a mathematician time to test a single research question and a staff engineer enough time to learn Claude internals, evaluation methods and deployment risks, aiming for conversion into operating lab work rather than publication-focused fellowships. The next thing to watch is whether the lab publishes results from this cohort the way it cited Fellows Program work.
If residents produce tools or papers that become standard internally, the Residency could become a template other labs copy by early 2027. Read Next: Databricks Now Gets Stripe Payments In Seconds So Paid Features Unlock Instantly
