Why a local partner? China's AI rules require models to clear local review, so Apple Intelligence never launched on the mainland. Alibaba's Qwen fills the gap. The beta will reveal how much of the full Apple Intelligence stack makes it into the China build — and how Apple explains the privacy split between on-device, its Private Cloud Compute, and Alibaba's servers.
The timing is pointed: domestic rivals are pushing on-device AI hard, and Apple needs a win in its second-largest market before the holiday quarter.
