Autonomous and guided agents run the same perceive-plan-act loop. The only thing that changes is where a human is allowed to step in — and that one difference decides whether a mistake gets caught at a checkpoint or compounds across five steps into an irreversible action nobody noticed until after the damage.

The stakes aren't theoretical. Gartner, as reported by NeuralTrust, forecasts over 40 percent of agentic AI projects will be cancelled by the end of 2027, partly on insufficient risk controls. The refund example in the full guide makes it concrete: the autonomous version issues the money and reports back; the guided version drafts it and waits. Same goal, same tools, same evidence — different risk, decided by one checkpoint.
