Access powerful open-source and proprietary models through OpenCode Zen, Gemini’s free quota, Kilo Gateway, Cline Provider, and Charm Hyper without paying for API access upfront.

AI coding agents are no longer just for companies or developers willing to pay for expensive APIs. Even without a credit card, you can now try capable agents powered by the latest open-source and proprietary models from Google and other AI labs. These agents can inspect repositories, edit files, run terminal commands, debug errors, execute tests, and work through complete coding tasks.

That is one of the best parts of the current AI revolution: a lot of this technology is already accessible if you know which tools to use. The problem is that many coding agents still require a paid subscription or API key before you can properly try them. This guide focuses on tools that give you a practical way to experience agentic coding and test strong models without paying for API access upfront.

OpenCode is one of my favorite open-source coding agents, and I use it almost every day. It gives you a terminal-based coding environment where the agent can explore your repository, edit files, run commands, and handle multi-step development tasks.

One of the main reasons I keep coming back to it is OpenCode Zen. If I want to test a newly released model, there is often a free option available through Zen, so I can try it directly inside my coding workflow without setting up another provider or paying for API credits.

And these are not necessarily small or low-quality models. OpenCode regularly provides access to capable models for free, including variants from Muse Spark, Ling, NVIDIA Nemotron, and experimental or promotional releases. The exact free catalog changes over time, which also makes Zen a useful place to experiment with new models as they become available.

You mainly need an OpenCode Zen account to get started with these free models.

Gemini CLI is Google's open-source terminal coding agent. It can understand repositories, modify files, run shell commands, use tools, and work through multi-step coding tasks directly from your terminal.

Google is probably one of the most generous model providers when it comes to free access. With Gemini CLI, you don't need to buy API credits or configure a separate model provider. You can simply install the CLI, sign in with an eligible Google account, and start using Google's latest Gemini models.

There is an important limitation, though: free access is still rate- and quota-limited. It is great for testing, learning, and smaller coding tasks, but I wouldn't rely on the free tier for heavy, continuous development on large real-world projects.

Kilo Code started as a VS Code coding agent, but it has grown into a much broader ecosystem. You can now use it through VS Code, JetBrains, the CLI, and Kilo's cloud services, giving you much more flexibility in how you work. It also supports hundreds of models, so you are not locked into a single provider.

The best part for me is its selection of free hosted models. Kilo regularly offers capable models at zero inference cost, and you can simply search for free in the model picker to see what is currently available. The exact selection changes as providers and promotions change, and some models may have upstream rate limits.

Even better is Auto Free ( kilo-auto/free ). Instead of choosing a model yourself, Kilo automatically routes your requests to one of the best free models currently available, with no credits required. That makes Kilo especially useful if you want to experiment with different modern coding models without constantly checking which free option is available.

Cline is another coding agent I really like, especially if you prefer working directly inside your IDE. It can inspect your codebase, create and modify files, run terminal commands, check errors, run tests, and keep iterating on a task until it reaches a working result. Cline also gives you a lot of visibility into what the agent is doing, so you can review actions before allowing it to make important changes.

What makes it interesting for free users is that Cline regularly provides free models through the Cline Provider. Once you sign in, you can open the model selector and look for models marked FREE. These options change over time and usually come with usage limits, but they are a great way to test new models, learn how Cline works, and experiment with agentic coding without immediately paying for API credits.

Crush is one of my favorite options if you enjoy coding directly from the terminal. It is built by Charm, the team behind tools such as Bubble Tea and Gum, so the terminal experience is extremely polished. At the same time, it is a proper coding agent with support for file editing, terminal commands, LSP integration, MCP servers, and multi-step coding tasks.

The best part is Charm Hyper, Crush's own model provider. Hyper has a free tier, so you can simply install Crush, select a Hyper model, sign in, and start coding without setting up API keys or buying credits. The free plan currently gives you 100 Hypercredits every month, which makes it useful for testing Crush and trying some of its coding-focused models for free.

If I were starting today, I would probably try OpenCode first. It gives you a really good balance of agent capabilities, model flexibility, and free access through OpenCode Zen.

After that, it depends on how you like to work. Choose Gemini CLI if you want the easiest access to Google's Gemini models, Kilo Code if you want a large selection of free hosted models, Cline if you prefer working inside an IDE, and Crush if you want a polished terminal-first experience.

Of course, free models come with limits. Quotas can change, promotional models may disappear, and they may not be enough for heavy work on large production repositories.

But that is not really the point. You can now install a capable coding agent, connect it to a free hosted model, and start experimenting with agentic software development without paying upfront.
