GPT-5.6 vs Claude Sonnet 5 for Coding: Practical Differences in Chinese-Language Codebases
"Should I use GPT or Claude for coding?" We hear this question more than any other. As a gateway serving both model families to developer teams every day, we see where their behavior actually differs. This isn't a benchmark shootout — just what actually matters for your choice. Claude Sonnet 5 excels at engineering consistency across large codebases: when you're modifying a feature in a big repo, it reads the surrounding code first, keeps changes aligned with the existing style, and rarely decides to "helpfully" refactor things. Paired with Claude Code's agent mode, multi-file tasks complete much more reliably.
GPT-5.6 excels at single, explosive performance: algorithm problems, standalone utilities, scripts from scratch — it delivers fast and accurate. It's also better at "guessing intent" from vague specs. Paired with Codex CLI, the experience is buttery smooth.
Both models handle Chinese comprehension fine at this point. The difference is in output habits: Claude tends to continue in the same comment style as your code; GPT is bolder about converting Chinese requirement descriptions into English identifier names. If your team requires Chinese comments and commit messages, Claude's "compliance" will save you revision cycles.
One agent turn with a 50K-token context, of which 40K is a cached prefix, and 3K output tokens (official list prices per million tokens: claude-sonnet-5 $2 input / $0.20 cached / $10 output; gpt-5.6-sol $4 / $0.40 / $20):
claude-sonnet-5: 10K × $2/M + 40K × $0.20/M + 3K × $10/M = $0.020 + $0.008 + $0.030 = $0.058 gpt-5.6-sol: 10K × $4/M + 40K × $0.40/M + 3K × $20/M = $0.040 + $0.016 + $0.060 = $0.116 Enter fullscreen mode Exit fullscreen mode Claude also bills a one-time cache write when the prefix is first stored, so short sessions benefit less. The real comparison is total spend per finished task: a model that needs fewer turns can win even at a higher per-token rate. Claude speaks the Anthropic Messages protocol and GPT the OpenAI protocol, so an A/B test is two calls with the same prompt:
PROMPT = 'Add input validation to parse_order() in orders.py; keep the existing Chinese comment style.' # Claude Sonnet 5 (Anthropic Messages) curl https://api.hop-base.com/v1/messages \ -H "x-api-key: $HOPBASE_API_KEY " -H "anthropic-version: 2023-06-01" -H "Content-Type: application/json" \ -d "{ \" model \": \" claude-sonnet-5 \", \" max_tokens \":2048, \" messages \":[{ \" role \": \" user \", \" content \": \" $PROMPT \" }]}" # GPT-5.6 Sol (OpenAI Chat Completions) curl https://api.hop-base.com/v1/chat/completions \ -H "Authorization: Bearer $HOPBASE_API_KEY " -H "Content-Type: application/json" \ -d "{ \" model \": \" gpt-5.6-sol \", \" messages \":[{ \" role \": \" user \", \" content \": \" $PROMPT \" }]}" Enter fullscreen mode Exit fullscreen mode Compare the diffs, then compare the usage blocks: token counts × list price is your real cost per answer. Newer generations (Claude Sonnet 5.5, GPT-6 Sol) have since launched at similar or lower list prices, and the same method applies to them. Run GET /v1/models first to see which IDs your key can call.
Someone else's benchmark can't replace your codebase.
