How to choose a stock market data MCP server for AI agents: 9 checks I run first

The checks below work on any server. Under each one I've put Equibles' answers (and gaps) as a worked example. There are a lot of "best MCP servers for stock market data" lists now. There are a lot of "best MCP servers for stock market data" lists now. Most of them compare tool counts and prices. Those matter, but they're not what breaks when an AI agent starts answering money questions. What breaks is a number with no source, a quarter that's off by one, or an agent quietly answering from memory because the tool came back empty.

So here are the nine checks I run before I trust a financial data MCP server with an agent. Each one takes a couple of minutes.

Ask for one specific figure and see whether the answer comes with a link to the filing, and ideally the line. "Revenue was $X" with no source is a dead end when a reader asks where it came from.

Equibles: filing and transcript excerpts come back with a link like equibles.com/stocks/jpm/documents/<id>#fromLine=1428&toLine=1442, which opens the document at those lines.

Ask for "NVIDIA Q1 2027". NVIDIA's fiscal year runs ahead of the calendar, so that's the call from May 2026. A server that maps quarters to calendar dates will hand the agent the wrong call or the wrong 10-Q, and the agent won't notice.

Equibles: every period is the company's own fiscal calendar, and the tools take fiscalYear and fiscalQuarter explicitly.

Plenty of servers list filings. Fewer let the agent search inside a 10-K and read exact lines. JPMorgan's 2025 10-K is 16,923 lines; the agent should be able to find the paragraph it needs without pulling all of them into context.

Equibles: SearchDocuments across filings, SearchDocument within one, ReadDocumentLines for exact ranges.

An earnings call transcript where every turn says "Speaker 3" is half as useful. Check that turns name the executive and their role, and that unknown voices are labelled as unknown rather than guessed.

Equibles: speaker-labelled turns with role, start and end timestamps, and a neutral label when the identity isn't trusted. The earnings call transcript API page shows the fields.

Ask for something the server probably doesn't have. A good tool says what it didn't find and why. A bad one returns an empty list, and the model fills the gap from training data.

Equibles: for example, "Guidance: none extracted from this release yet. This does NOT mean the company gave no guidance."

Claude and ChatGPT connectors work best with OAuth sign-in. If the only route is "create a key and paste it into a config file", most analysts won't get past setup.

Equibles: https://mcp.equibles.com/mcp supports sign-in with your account, so Claude and ChatGPT users never create a key. API keys exist for scripts and clients without sign-in.

The tool list and descriptions tell you more than the landing page. They're also what the model reads, so vague descriptions mean wrong tool choices.

Equibles: tools/list works without a key (122 tools today), so you can inspect them from any MCP client or a curl call before creating an account.

"Read-only" is a common claim and often not quite true. Portfolio, watchlist, alert or feedback tools change state. That's fine, but you should know which ones they are before you let an agent loose.

Equibles: the market data tools only read; portfolio, watchlist and feedback tools write to your account. Each tool carries MCP annotations ( readOnlyHint, destructiveHint ) so a client can tell them apart.

Check the daily allowance, whether it's shared with the REST API, and what's held back for paid plans. Prices and quote delays are where the differences hide.

Equibles: 100 requests a day on the free plan, shared between MCP and REST, no card. End-of-day prices on free; delayed quotes and option chains on Plus ($9.99 a month); real-time quotes on Pro. Filings, transcripts, fundamentals and 13F holdings are on the free plan.

Connect the server, then paste one prompt that hits most checks at once:

"Using [server name], find what JPMorgan's latest 10-K says about AI agents, quote the exact sentence, give the filing date and line numbers, and link the source. Then tell me what JPMorgan guided for its next quarter, and say plainly if you can't find it."

Name the server in the prompt, or the model may skip the tools. Then check the links by hand.

Equibles is at equibles.com/mcp, with setup guides for Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor and others in the docs. If you're picking a stock market data MCP server for AI agents, run these nine checks on every candidate, Equibles included.
