To integrate investment research into your AI agent, give it a bounded way to submit a research brief, retrieve the completed report and preserve the sources. Use Valyu DeepResearch for the multi-source investigation; keep spending approval and task identity in application code, not model-generated arguments.

We will build a small TypeScript integration that investigates a Microsoft investment thesis using SEC filings, earnings transcripts and official company material. The output is a cited evidence brief: what supports the thesis, what challenges it, what remains unknown and what to verify next. It is not a stock picker, valuation model or trading bot.

Imagine you are adding research to an investment assistant. A user asks:

“Is Microsoft's AI infrastructure spending justified by growth in its cloud business?”

A company summary is easy to produce. It might list products, describe the AI market and repeat management's optimism. None of that necessarily tests the investment thesis.

The useful job is narrower: identify the assumptions, find evidence that might invalidate them, and explain what the disclosures do not establish. Then a person can decide which questions need more work before making an investment decision.

Our worked brief compares Microsoft's fiscal 2024 and 2025, not “the latest two years.” Fixed periods make the task easier to inspect and avoid implying that this example includes every subsequent development.

The thesis is a proposition to investigate, not a conclusion we are asserting. In particular, rising cloud revenue does not, on its own, establish the return earned on AI infrastructure spending.

An investment research agent should return inspectable evidence and explicit uncertainty, not simply a confident recommendation. For this tutorial, the report has five sections:

For each material finding, ask for the reporting period, metric definition, evidence type and source link. Those details are more useful than an unsupported “bullish” or “bearish” label.

The agent delegates research. Application code owns approval and task state. A person owns the investment decision.

Use the sources that can answer the question rather than adding every available dataset.

The example selects valyu/valyu-sec-filings, valyu/valyu-earnings-US and the microsoft.com domain. Source availability and account access still apply. See the Valyu source catalogue before choosing datasets. There are more financial and investment research datasets like valyu/valyu-short-seller-reports, valyu/valyu-buyside-letters-pitches, valyu/valyu-commodities to support you!

We do not enable broad news search in the minimal version. News can be useful for external context, but adding it changes the research scope. Make that an intentional extension, not a silent fallback.

Use Valyu Search if your own agent needs to control individual queries and synthesize retrieved passages. Here we want a complete, multi-source evidence brief, so we use DeepResearch instead of building another search-and-reading loop.

Note: We used OpenAI in this article. It's optional. Only used because we are integrating this into an AI agent.

The brief in the script deliberately asks for supporting, contradictory and missing evidence. It also tells the researcher which comparisons are unsafe:

These are investigation instructions, not automated financial checks. The application does not calculate a return, normalize accounting measures or prove the researcher followed every instruction. Review the cited definitions and periods before using a comparison.

A fact, a forecast and an interpretation can appear in the same report. Do not give them the same evidentiary weight.

Use Node.js 24.2 or later. The example uses native TypeScript execution and was checked on Node.js 24.12.0.

mkdir investment-research-agent cd investment-research-agent npm init -y npm pkg set type = module npm install valyu-js@2.11.1 ai@7.0.143 @ai-sdk/openai@4.0.96 zod@4.6.7 Enter fullscreen mode Exit fullscreen mode Before storing credentials, add these entries to.gitignore:

node_modules/.env*.investment/ *.pem *.key credentials.* secrets.* Enter fullscreen mode Exit fullscreen mode Get a Valyu API key from platform.valyu.ai, and confirm access to the selected financial sources. Put your credentials and host-model configuration in.env.local:

VALYU_API_KEY=your-valyu-key OPENAI_API_KEY=your-openai-key OPENAI_MODEL=your-tool-capable-openai-model-id Enter fullscreen mode Exit fullscreen mode Replace all three placeholders. The host model must support function calling through the OpenAI Responses API. OpenAI is the host-model provider chosen for this tutorial; Valyu is not restricted to that provider.

Keep the keys server-side. The research brief should contain only information you are authorized to send to the services involved. This example does not send a private portfolio, account balance or client records.

Save this complete example as investment-agent.ts.

There are two tools: one starts the exact approved brief, and the other checks the saved task. Neither accepts a model-generated company, budget, approval flag or task ID.

" + " Do not delete uncertain submission state to start another task. " ); process. exitCode = 1; }); } Enter fullscreen mode Exit fullscreen mode The code uses the Valyu TypeScript DeepResearch SDK and Vercel AI SDK tool calling. The SDK options use camelCase, such as researchStrategy and reportFormat; equivalent REST fields use snake_case.

The user chooses start or check. The host model must invoke that action's tool, then gets a tool-free step to explain the outcome. It does not independently decide which investment to investigate. In an existing conversational agent, the same tool handlers can sit behind your own request and approval flow.

First, review the scope without making an API call:

node investment-agent.ts preview Enter fullscreen mode Exit fullscreen mode This prints the brief and approval instructions. No API keys are required for the preview.

When you intend to spend the credits, start the task explicitly:

node --env-file =.env.local investment-agent.ts start --approve-standard Enter fullscreen mode Exit fullscreen mode This command can incur charges: 100 base credits for the standard research task at current pricing, plus separate host-model usage. The example enables no optional research tools or file deliverables. Check current pricing and source access before running it.

The local.investment/task.json file reserves the job before submission, then records the returned task ID. The start tool returns an acknowledgment, not investment findings.

An existing reservation blocks another start in that directory. This intentionally supports one local research job, not a multi-user service or exactly-once distributed execution.

node --env-file =.env.local investment-agent.ts check Enter fullscreen mode Exit fullscreen mode If the task is still queued or running, check again after a delay. Do not run start again to see whether the report is ready. Each check invocation also uses the configured host model, so those calls have their own usage cost.

On successful completion, the example saves:

The completed tool result also gives the report and sources to the host model. Treat its final acknowledgment or summary as a convenience, not a second fact check. The saved report and source records are the artifacts to review.

Start with the assumptions that matter most to the thesis:

For this example, a useful report might conclude that part of the thesis cannot be established from public disclosures. That is a valid research outcome. Do not force a bullish or bearish answer to make the tool seem decisive.

These are review criteria, not observed results from the supplied brief. We have not run a paid investigation or included invented Microsoft findings in this article.

A client timeout does not prove that the remote task failed. If the create response was lost after the task was accepted, blindly submitting the same brief can create another paid run.

The code reserves the local job before creation and disables the SDK's automatic rate-limit retries for this example. If no confirmed task ID was saved, reconcile the submission through the platform or support before starting a replacement. Do not delete uncertain state just to bypass the guard.

The local reservation is deliberately conservative. Even a confirmed rejection leaves it in place for inspection. The example does not automatically create a replacement, cancel tasks or run a webhook server. The SDK can retry status retrieval, but that checks the same task rather than buying another investigation. For a deployed service, use a per-user job store, explicit authorization and a worker or verified completion webhook. See research in your application.

Reports and retrieved pages are untrusted input to the host model. Present them as evidence, not instructions that grant new permissions.

This integration exposes only the relevant research action, then disables tools in the follow-up step. The model cannot change the approved brief or add expensive research capabilities through tool arguments. It has no brokerage, shell or payment tool.

Those boundaries do not prove that the report or final summary is accurate. Preserve source links, review important passages, sanitize Markdown if rendering HTML, and keep consequential investment actions behind a separate authorization process.

No. It investigates a thesis and prepares a cited evidence brief. It does not calculate a valuation, forecast a stock price, assess a user's personal suitability or execute trades.

This job spans filings, management commentary and multiple sub-questions, and we want a synthesized report. DeepResearch handles that investigation. Use Search when your application needs direct control of each query and its own evidence-synthesis loop.

Yes. Update the question, periods, strategy, report requirements and source scope in BRIEF, then obtain approval for that exact configuration. Keep the old job state for audit and reconcile it before intentionally starting a separate job. The supplied CLI uses one local job directory.

Yes, supported datasets can extend the research scope, subject to account access. Add only what the question needs. If your application calculates growth rates, ratios or valuation outputs, perform those calculations in code with explicit periods and units rather than relying on unchecked model arithmetic.

No. Citations make the evidence inspectable; they do not certify the source, validate every inference or guarantee complete coverage. Your review may find that an assumption remains untested or that the evidence contradicts the thesis.

The first useful integration is not a financial platform. It is one scoped research job, an explicit budget, a saved task ID and evidence someone can inspect.

Give your agent a way to challenge the thesis, not just make it sound convincing.

What would you ask it to investigate first: a company's spending, margin assumptions or a risk that could break your thesis?
