Two months ago I watched college football coaches sing the Gap Band's Outstanding behind NPR's famous desk — none of it real, all of it AI. This month I'm running DeskConcert AI, a Tiny Desk AI generator. The gap between those two events was a crash course in building on someone else's viral moment. Some notes from inside the wave.

One to three photos in — a lead singer, optionally a keyboard player and a saxophonist — and out comes a 15-second vertical MP4: your people, at a desk, mid-performance, with an AI-composed funk track. No editing UI, no timeline, no audio mixing. You pay per render, not per month.

The stack is deliberately boring: TanStack Start on the frontend, a thin credit-billing layer, and third-party video generation models (Seedance 2.5 and MiniMax's Hailuo — disclosed in our terms) doing the heavy lifting. The interesting engineering is not the model calls. It's everything around them.

Anyone can call a video model. The product work is deciding when not to:

Every one of those came from watching competitor reviews, not from a spec.

Search "best Tiny Desk AI generator" and you'll find a dozen comparison pages, each ranking its own product first. I tested what ChatGPT and Gemini actually recommend for that query: they read those pages and cite them. AI assistants are the new SERP, and they crawl whatever comparison survives.

So we published our own generator comparison — raw specs, our product not ranked first overall, prices checked and dated. The honest table is the one that gets quoted. We'll see if that bet pays off.

Most Tiny Desk generators mix the original 1982 recording into the MP4. We compose an original soundtrack instead. Two reasons: it moves the licensing problem off the user (platforms have licensed catalogs in-app for the "real" song), and a generator that composes rather than copies survives the trend rotating to the next audio meme.

Trend waves decay fast. The infrastructure that survives them — photo intake, credit billing, render orchestration, refund logic — is generic. The plan isn't "Tiny Desk forever"; it's "one-photo-to-performance, whatever the next performance format is."

If you want to see the output: deskconcert.com. The honest free-tier answer (there is no free full generator — here's why) and the spec comparison are the two pages I'd point a skeptic at.

Disclosure: I built DeskConcert AI. This post is a build log, not a neutral review.
