GitHub's Octoverse 2026, published October 28 at Universe, puts a number on what every developer has felt: agents are now a major source of code. By September 2026, more than 40% of pull requests started with a coding agent's first draft — up from 17% in March. That's 110 million agent-started PRs in a single month, about 6x March's volume.

Definitions first: GitHub counts a PR as "agent-started" when its first draft came from an agent GitHub can detect. Detected use is a floor — the real number is higher. And it counts pull requests, not lines of code, so no, this doesn't mean 40% of all code is AI-written.

The interesting part is velocity. In September, 90% of agent-involved PRs merged within two weeks vs ~86% without detected agent involvement. In February agents were slightly behind (83%). They also touch more files: 87% multi-file vs 79%. But GitHub measured merges, not correctness — no data on bugs, security issues, or reverts. A merge means a human accepted it, nothing more.

The takeaway for working developers: the bottleneck moved from writing to reviewing. The teams that thrive will be the ones that got serious about reviewing agent output — because the 40% is a floor, and it's still climbing.
