Sweden’s Government Offices, which runs the work of the prime minister and the ministries, has blocked staff from using OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Anthropic’s Claude on their work computers. The block took effect today.

Ekot, the news service of public broadcaster Sveriges Radio, first reported the plan on 23 October.

Staff will no longer be able to reach the two chatbots through a web browser, the Government Offices told SVT by email. Instead, they are being sent to Microsoft’s Copilot. It said it has checked that tool and made it safer.

The goal is for staff to use only tools it has approved. The block covers the web versions of both chatbots. Mikael Wettercrantz, its head of digital services, told Ekot that AI tools used without a contract can put the safety of its data at risk.

Some staff can still use ChatGPT and Claude through Intric, a Stockholm company that runs a platform for building AI assistants. Intric won a deal with the Government Offices in July. It says its platform runs on servers in Sweden, with no need for foreign cloud firms.

Other Swedish agencies have taken similar steps. The Swedish Tax Agency and the National Board of Institutional Care have also blocked AI services, Ekot found. The Swedish Enforcement Authority is considering doing the same, SVT reported.

Before this, it had already limited the use of DeepSeek, the Chinese AI chatbot. Last week, the US went further and banned DeepSeek products across its federal civilian agencies, BleepingComputer reported.

Big organisations elsewhere have also put limits on outside AI tools. In the US, Charles Schwab is blocking AI agents such as Meta’s Muse from moving client money.

OpenAI and Anthropic have not publicly commented on the Swedish decision.
