This is a submission for the Hacktoberfest Open-Source AI Challenge Week 2: Side Hustle.
SideHustle AI is a concept for a local-first AI assistant that helps freelancers and small business owners organise invoices and receipts.
It is designed to extract important information such as invoice numbers, dates, vendor names, amounts and payment status, making expense tracking faster and easier.
The goal is to reduce repetitive administrative work and help freelancers spend more time on their actual business.
SideHustle AI focuses on making invoice management simple, affordable and privacy-friendly.
The proposed system uses React for the user interface, Python for document processing, and Ollama to run an open-weight language model locally.
The workflow involves extracting text from invoices, identifying relevant fields with AI, organising the extracted information, and allowing users to review their expenses.
Open-source AI makes this idea more accessible to freelancers who cannot afford expensive subscriptions.
Running an open-weight model locally can help keep sensitive financial documents on the user's computer rather than sending them to an external AI service. It also provides flexibility to experiment with different models, customise the extraction process, and reduce dependence on a single AI provider.
Although local inference still requires suitable hardware and electricity, it can reduce recurring API costs and give users more control over their data.
The intended users are freelancers and small business owners who regularly handle invoices and receipts.
The next step is to gather feedback from potential users, evaluate extraction accuracy, and identify features that would make the tool valuable enough to pay for.
Small businesses deserve useful AI tools without unnecessary complexity, expensive subscriptions, or avoidable exposure of sensitive information.
SideHustle AI explores how open-weight models can make practical AI applications more affordable, flexible and privacy-conscious.
