Building AI agents and automation workflows on your local machine is fun. Everything works smoothly, logs look clean, and responses come back fast.

Then you push it to production, and within 24 hours, everything falls apart.

APIs time out, webhooks send duplicate triggers, and the LLM suddenly decides to wrap its JSON response inside a random conversational sentence, instantly crashing your parser.

If you are tired of your automated pipelines breaking at 3 AM, here is how to build them so they actually survive the real world.

No matter how many times you write "Output ONLY valid JSON" in your system prompt, an LLM will eventually break format. If your code directly parses the raw model response with JSON.parse(), your app is a ticking time bomb.

The Fix: Always sanitize the string before parsing. Strip out markdown code block wrappers ( ` json ), find the first { and last }, and wrap it in a try/catch block with a fallback routine or self-healing retry prompt.

When working with APIs like WhatsApp, Stripe, or custom webhooks, network glitches happen. Providers will often retry sending the exact same payload two or three times if they don't get an immediate 200 OK response.

If your workflow isn't idempotent, your automation will trigger multiple times for the exact same event.

APIs go down, rate limits get hit (Error 429), and providers have outages. If your entire system relies on a single LLM endpoint without a backup plan, a single upstream outage takes your whole app offline.

Build a simple wrapper or circuit breaker that catches API errors and instantly falls back to a secondary model, a cheaper backup provider, or a cached response so your users never see a hard crash.

AI development isn't just about writing clever prompts anymore鈥攊t's about building resilient software architecture around unpredictable models.

What is the most annoying bug your automation workflows have run into lately? Let's talk about it in the comments! 馃憞
